BizXword is a professional crossword development software kit. With it you can
make crossword grids of any size, within the memory limits of your PC, place your black and white spaces anywhere in the grid
make you own dictionaries in several ways, including extracting dictionaries from files
instruct the program to search a list of dictionaries in order when populating your crossword grid

BizXword will scan files and make dictionaries for you. It will allow you to edit and add words to your dictionaries. This makes BizXword a good tool to produce topical crossword puzzles, such as puzzles with words of capital cities and names of nations, or puzzles with names associated with a sports code, or puzzles with words from a certain language.
Dictionaries in BizXword are lists of words arranged in a certain format. Any word list presented in ASCII format, like the letters you see on this page, can be converted into a BizXword dictionary.
A 8000 word dictionary of Norwegian words can be purchased for (approx) US$6 from Arnkjell Bjerkenes. Another source for word lists is the Internet site ftp://ftp.ox.ac.uk:/pub/wordlists. From that site you can download word lists for the following topics:

BizXword can find hundreds of these. Such empty grids are the most difficult to fill.

BizXword allows you to define your own grids, their symmetries and save them for later use. From the BizXword help file. Square grids can have several types of symmetry, including no symmetry.

Developing a crossword in BizXword. The program was asked to find 777 consecutive solutions from a single dictionary. It has found 529 solutions in 8 seconds. By way of contrast BizXword has searched the same dictionary for over 500 hours for a single solution to an empty 7x7 grid and found no solution yet.
